Homeless

I left for work this morning on the 6:30 RiverLine. I was extremely disappointed to see a homeless person sleeping on one of the benches. I called the non-emergency police number to notify them. I have a lot of confidence in our Police department, so I'm sure they'll address is appropriately.

This is not the type of environment I want to raise my children in. If they don't already have one, Palmyra should adopt a no-tolerance policy on vagrants and panhandlers. In 5 years, I've only seen two others, begging outside Wawa. Take care of it before it becomes a bigger issue.

Not the type of environment that you want to raise your children in?? A person is homeless and you think it's disturbing??

What's disturbing Paris Hilton having a show about finding a new BFF and being a millionare.. and a person has no where to live and that bothers you?? We all may be out there some day with the way the economy is at this point.. you don't know his circumstances, or his life.. so dont sit there and say that you dont want your children to grow up in this type of environment. What you need to do is educate them on how to be understanding.

Yes, you are correct. I don't want to raise my children in that environment, and anyone that says that they don't mind living around vagrants is blowing smoke.

Yes, it is possible that it was someone who recently lost their job, and for whom I would have utmost compassion. However, it is also possible that it was someone who was on drugs, who might have been unsafe, who might be looking to commit a crime. I don't want to take any chances.

Well then I suggest that if you don't know his situation, don't judge him. No tolerance policy?? I just don't get it... how about a no tolerance policy on kids that walk in the middle of the street while you're trying to drive down it, and I don't get the Crown Fried Chicken comment either... why is it too "black" for you?? We have Chinese food places, italian??

I just dont get it.... and no.. I'm not black either... and I have lived in Palmyra for over 25 years... not 5 like you....

Hey, guess what? I don't want any homeless around me either. Sorry, that's the way it is.
You don't mind people sleeping on benches in the middle of town, anon? Think of it another way. I wonder how a potential business owner looking to open a business in one of our numerous vacant buildings would feel about somebody sleeping in the doorway of a property they were looking at? I know if it was me or any other person with common sense (read: non-liberal), I'd be high-tailing it to the next town up the road. I fell sorry for the homeless, sure. I think the right thing was done here, so the local authorities could direct this person to the nearest shelter and hopefully getting them the help they need to get back on their feet and becoming a productive member of society.

What comment did I make about Crown Fried Chicken, other than asking what people thought of the sign?

I haven't even touched on the fact that these chains typically are located in "sketchy" areas, and that they frequently play host to shootings, drug dealings, etc. Some are even built with bullet proof glass at the counter.

It's no secret that there is drug activity on Cinnaminson Ave already. I don't think this is going to help the situation.

With that being said, I hope I am proven wrong. It would be fantastic for Palmyra for this to become a successful, worthwhile business.

Lastly, please don't accuse me of being a racist. I am not, nor have I made any comments that should lead you to believe that I am.

Regarding the chicken place-who said anything about anyone's race? Although I agree with you on the kids walking down the middle of the strret. That's out of control.

And how do you know that there is drug activity on Cinnaminson Avenue??

I didn't accuse you of being a racist. I just dont understand what a Crown Fried Chicken has to do with negativity.. that's all I meant by it.

Look.. I'm not trying to say that you guys don't deserve your opinions... but I dont think one homeless person is going to turn Palmyra into a slum.

The poll said.. does the new crown fried chicken sign fit in with the image you envision for our town... does the Muslim Center?? That used to be our community center..

Anonymous,
You brought race into this conversation first, now religion.

I can tell you what my "image" of the town is. We live in a beautiful, historic, Victorian town with some architecture and other features that are incredible. I envision our town becoming what Collingswood has become. The foundation is already there. Personally (we are all entitled to our opinions) I don't think that sign fits my "image".

I'm not trying to bring religion into it... Im really not... and Iunderstand what you're saying now about it looking historic.. so for that I apologize.

I agree on the kids in the middle of the street not moving for traffic. Also Pedestrians are not using the crosswalks, and are walking right in front of traffic. Palmyra needs to get a lid on it ASAP before someone gets hurt. Lets be proactive, not reactive!
Also Homeless people have a problem that Towns need to address in a timely manner or the problem will grow fast. Lets be proactive, not reactive!
